Capsule Review- Gravity

by allan tong for FILMbutton

Gravity feels like it strayed from one of the summer blockbuster screens into TIFF where adult dramas herald the next Oscar season. None of this matters, because Gravity is an amazing thriller about two American astronauts who are hurtled into outer space after enduring an accident at their spacecraft. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney play the astronauts who spend most of their time floating in outer nothingness, searching for a space ship from another country to take them home before their oxygen runs out. The story is told in real time, and the special effects are so utterly convincing you’ll have trouble walking after the screening. There was strong word-of-mouth for Gravity which will likely attract a devoted audience when it’s released, especially in 3D.

Allan is a Toronto filmmaker, co-directing Leone Stars, a documentary about child victims of the Sierra Leonean civil war.
