Classic Film TAMPOPO Opens October 28th in LA then Across US

“Unfolds like a prix fixe tasting menu of strange comic delights, the director’s fabulist sensibilities feeding into an episodic foodie fantasia about all of the things that give life its flavor and make it worth savoring.”
– David Ehrlich, IndieWire

“Very funny. Tampopo is one of those utterly original movies that seems to exist in no known category.”
– Roger Ebert, The Chicago Sun-Times

“Japanese films have commented before on the intrinsic connection between food and sex, but not with the erotic gusto of Juzo Itami’s Tampopo and rarely with the comic lustiness of this broad-scale satire.”
– Sheila Benson, The Los Angeles Times

Juzo Itami’s rapturous “ramen western” TAMPOPO is now in theaters for the first time in nearly 30 years, in a new 4K restoration by Janus Films. The re-release started on October 21st at Film Forum in New York, and will now continue on October 28th in Los Angeles at the Landmark Nuart, followed by a national rollout.

TAMPOPO is the tale of an enigmatic band of ramen ronin, among them Ken Watanabe in his breakthrough role, who guide the widow of a noodle-shop owner on her quest for the perfect recipe. The film serves up a savory broth of culinary adventure, seasoned with offbeat comedy sketches and the erotic exploits of a gastronome gangster. Sweet, sexy, surreal, and mouthwatering, TAMPOPO remains one of the most delectable exemplars of food on film in a newly ramen-mad era.
