After two sold out screenings at TIFF, FILTHY GORGEOUS: THE BOB GUCCIONI STORY opens at the TIFF Bell Lightbox on Friday, September 20. The latest film from Barry Avrich in a series of revealing projects about powerful entertainment icons and moguls, FILTHY GORGEOUS had its world premiere at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival on Monday, Sept. 9.

FILTHY GORGEOUS chronicles the rise and fall of Bob Guccione, founder of notorious magazine Penthouse. Boasting archival and home video footage, the film profiles Guccione’s rise to success as an unlikely revolutionary who challenged social mores and rose to become a dominating and influential force in the media landscape of his time. Giving rival magazine Playboy a run for its money, Guccione was one of America’s richest men by the early 80s but passed away penniless at the age of 79 in the small city of Plano, Texas.

FILTHY GORGEOUS features candid interviews with colleagues, lovers, family members, and pundits including two of Guccione’s sons, Nick and Bob Jr., the founder of Spin and Gear magazines, and many of his closest confidantes and Penthouse Pets. Notable appearances include: Alan Dershowitz, Penthouse’s 1st Amendment Lawyer and confidante; Xaviera Hollander, aka The Happy Hooker, Penthouse columnist for 30 years; Al Goldstein, publisher of competitor Screw Magazine; Jane Homlish, Guccione’s personal assistant for 35 years, and Victoria Johnson, Guccione’s lover and Penthouse Pet of The Year, 1978.

Produced, written and directed by Barry Avrich, FILTHTY GORGEOUS is a Melbar Entertainment Group production in association with EPIX.
