Hot Docs 15 – BEING CANADIAN

Saturday, April 25 @ 9:45pm First Festival Screening

Synopsis:

In this playful and charming ode to Canadiana, Calgarian-turned-Hollywood comedy writing guru Robert Cohen (The Simpsons, The Big Bang Theory) comes home on an epic quest to rediscover Canada’s national identity. Shocked and amused by how little his American friends and colleagues know about their northern neighbours, Cohen’s mission is to dispel the stereotypes (most people live in igloos), misconceptions (all police ride horses) and absurd inaccuracies (Canada’s population is 6,000) he was starting to hear too often. Set up as coast-to-coast road movie—a tongue-in-cheek nod to Donald Shebib’s Goin’ Down the Road — Cohen crosses paths with delightful eccentrics and little-known national treasures, like Canada’s strategic reserve of maple syrup. With an all-star line-up of Canadian comics Mike Myers, Seth Rogen, Will Arnett, Rick Mercer and Martin Short, musicians Rush and the Barenaked Ladies, and thought-leaders Malcolm Gladwell and Kim Campbell—Being Canadian takes us on a hilarious and insightful journey full of true patriot love.
