Lincoln leads Oscars race with 12 nominations

The historical drama Lincoln leads this year’s Oscar race with 12 nominations, closely followed by Life of Pi with 11.  Both films are competing for best picture along with

  • Beasts of the Southern Wild
  • Silver Linings Playbook
  • Zero Dark Thirty
  • Les Misérables
  • Amour
  • Django Unchained
  • Argo

Lincoln’s director Steven Spielberg and actors Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones were also nominated. Set in the mid-19th century, the drama explores U.S. President Abraham Lincoln’s final four months as he tries to abolish slavery.

Life of Pi is based on Canadian Yann Martel’s award-winning novel earned a best director nomination for Ang Lee.

Kim Nguyen’s African war drama Rebelle (aka War Witch) (click link for review on FILMbutton) is up for best foreign film against Michael Haneke’s end-of-life drama Amour (Austria), the court melodrama A Royal Affair (Denmark), seafaring adventure Kon-Tiki (Norway) and political tale No (Chile).  Rebelle was just crowned the Best Canadian film by Vancouver film critics (click link to view full list).

The Oscars will be televised on February 24 and hosted by Family Guy creator, Seth MacFarlane.
