The four-year-old Mei is full of curiosity and happens across the troll Totoro in a forest. Her sister Satsuki does not believe Mei, but she soon meets Totoro too, at a rainy bus station waiting for her father. Meanwhile, Mei sets off to the hospital after she hears her mother is scheduled to be discharged and gets lost on the way.
