“This important Academy Special Award will help turn the spotlight on the growing and complex issues we deal with around persons who are blind or partially sighted, ableism and inclusion, and the always troubling fact that accessibility is still not universal,” says Varner.

Canada In Perspective is a remarkable program that explores issues pertinent to our audience,” says AMI President and CEO, David Errington. “Not only does it tackle a diverse range of topics, but it provides a much-needed conduit for persons with disabilities across the country.”

Varner is currently producing the fifth season of Canada in Perspective at the Queen’s Quay Corus Studios, which she points out offers “complete accessibility and is one of the best studios in the city for this type of program.” Season 5 of Canada in Perspective will air on AMI-tv in June.

Previously, Varner was Executive Producer of In House Programming at Discovery Canada and was also responsible for producing over 200 hours of science content annually. She also spearheaded the first ever Canada/US co-production with the Science Channel of the live landing of the Phoenix spacecraft on Mars.
