When people talk about “commedia all’italiana”, they usually have a few references to illustrate their sentiments. No need for that anymore : Scusate, Se Esisto (Do You See Me?) is the perfect example, bringing together all the ingredients for an impeccable moment of pure contemporary Italian delight, spiced up with a special touch of Abruzzese.

Riccardo Milani first introduces us to Serena Bruno, an extremely talented and successful architect on the international scene who, after several years spent abroad, is feeling seriously homesick and decides to head back to the nest. The direttore then proceeds to draw a bleak portrait of his old and close-minded country, ruled by male nepotism and where talented women are constrained to second-rate assistant jobs, forever in the shadow of their male counterparts, before taking us into the heart of his story : the hilarious and touching emotional self esteem reconstruction of his heroine, through her various new life (mis)adventures, advised by her new boss, crush, and gay best friend.

In Scusate, Se Esisto (Do You See Me?), the humour is distilled with a master’s hand, revealed in successive waves of escalating exaggeration that will sometimes leave you panting in your seat (try to resist Zia Clementina), while the emotional rollercoaster Serena goes through will certainly awake resonating feelings in many of us. The filmmaker and the fantastic cast will be the perfect companions for a relaxing evening or even better, a successful date, all’italiana of course.
