imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival, with presenting sponsor Bell Media, announces the Festival’s short film programmes, the return of The Award Show with presenters Alanis Obomsawin, Ashley Burnham and more, and free live streaming of festival events.

The 16th imagineNATIVE Festival will present 12 shorts programmes from October 14-18, 2015 at the TIFF Bell Lightbox featuring dramas, comedies, docs, and music videos including #selfie #short: Youth Shorts with 10 films by, and about, Indigenous youth and their experiences; and Solar Flares: Experimental Program, which will include the Ontario premiere of Dancing in the Space Between, the last film made by Lacy Morin-Desjarlais and Michele Sereda before they were lost in a tragic car accident in February 2015.

imagineNATIVE will also screen shorts that explore family, folklore, and origin stories of culture and land in Stories from Land + Sky, with seven delightful films by international artists; Welcome to Country, six films about the importance of home and tradition; and Next of Kin, eight films that spotlight relationships between children, parents and grandparents.

Three imagineNATIVE shorts programmes will focus on how individuals can create change in big ways with small gestures. Unsung Warriors with five films sharing stories of heroes who come in many shapes and sizes; Matrilineal Matters with eight films celebrating the role of women as storytellers and protectors; and Masculine Moves with seven films that examine the meaning of the word “masculinity”, and the diverse experiences of Indigenous men.

imagineNATIVE will present shorts from the around the globe and right here at home with Trade Winds: International Shorts, seven films showcasing incredible cinematography and gripping storylines, while celebrating the universality of the human experience; and Home Fires: Canadian Shorts, nine films made in Canada by filmmakers such as Caroline Monnet and Kent Monkman.

The 2015 International Spotlight will focus on Sámi films and filmmakers of the Sápmi nation, and imagineNATIVE will present two shorts programmes by the Indigenous people of Norway, Sweden, and Finland: Sámi Spotlight III: 7 Sámi Stories and Sámi Spotlight IV: Shorts 1991–2014.

On Saturday, October 17, 2015, the imagineNATIVE Awards Show at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, will celebrate Indigenous film, video, audio and new media artists including Tantoo Cardinal, the recipient of the inaugural August Schellenberg Award of Excellence. Hosted by Mi’kmaq comedian Candy Palmater, presenters will include legendary filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin, and Mrs Universe 2015 Ashley Burnham.
