The genius of David Beck—an artist beloved by collectors yet largely unknown to the general public—is revealed in this highly entertaining documentary, which chronicles his life from near-destitution to recognition by such world-class museums as the Met, the Guggenheim, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Beck’s elaborate works are part architecture, part kinetic sculpture, and part carving; full of humor and whimsy, they present reflections of life rendered in miniature while forming a genre all their own. What they can’t fully show is the exacting, even excruciating effort that goes into them over the course of many years. Director Olympia Stone explores the painstaking creative process of the most original artist you’ve never heard of while coaxing out his wit and charm for the camera.
