Award-winning interactive exhibition digiPlaySpace and the Canada’s Top Ten Film Festival launch international tours in China and the United States.

LONDON – Piers Handling, Director and CEO of TIFF, today announced major international touring destinations for TIFF programming to centres around the world, furthering the organization’s global strategy of placing original programming in cultural institutions worldwide. TIFF will launch an international tour of the immensely popular interactive technology exhibition digiPlaySpace® to four locations in China, including Beijing, and one in Minnesota, from July 21, 2015 through September 2016. The organization’s annual Canada’s Top Ten Film Festival™ marks a milestone as it goes to Los Angeles for the very first time from July 30 to August 1 in a travelling program organized by TIFF and Film Independent at LACMA.

“We are celebrating our 40th anniversary this year, and taking TIFF programming to destinations all over the world is part of our ambitious strategy for the future of this organization,” said Handling. “By touring our programming to cultural institutions around the world, we are championing Canadian talent abroad, and continuing to lead in the evolution of children’s media literacy and storytelling in the digital age — two of our key focus areas as we expand our programming on a global scale.”

In partnership with the Beijing Huaxie Cultural Development Company, an internationally renowned cultural agency that brings world exhibitions to Chinese museums and galleries, digiPlaySpace will begin its tour at the Hebei Museum in Shijiazhuang on July 21, 2015, then continue to the Hunan Provincial Museum in ChangSha, Hunan, the Shaanxi History Museum in Xi’an, Shaanxi and the Chinese Museum of Women and Children in Beijing through April 2016, before returning to North America for a stop at the Minnesota Children’s Museum from May 22 to September 4, 2016.

digiPlaySpace was launched in 2012 for a two-week run in conjunction with the TIFF Kids International Film Festival™, to stimulate creativity and discovery in young audiences by exposing them to creative technologies and innovative media experiences. In the last four years, digiPlaySpace was awarded the 2013 Ontario Museum Association (OMA) Award for Excellence in Programs, and expanded to run for six weeks each spring at TIFF Bell Lightbox, featuring premiere and original commissioned works by Canadian and internationally acclaimed digital media artists that continue to inspire creative thinking through play. The touring package includes installations from each of the four exhibitions at TIFF Bell Lightbox, including Visitor, a TIFF-commissioned Canadian work for the 2015 edition, a highly unique interactive light sculpture created by Vancouver-based Tangible Interaction, a company that specializes in sensory-based installations.

Now in its 14th year, TIFF’s annual Canada’s Top Ten Film Festival tours for the very first time with a free programme that will include three screenings of features and an onstage conversation with a special guest, at the Bing Theater at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) from July 30 to August 1, 2015. Feature screenings include Albert Shin’s In Her Place (2014), Maxime Giroux’s Felix & Meira (2014), and Zacharias Kunuk’s Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (2001), which recently took the number one spot on TIFF’s fourth Canada’s All-Time Top Ten List, an international poll of industry and academics on the most memorable Canadian films, edging out the long-standing top choice, Claude Jutra’s 1971 film Mon oncle Antoine.

Established by TIFF in 2001, the Canada’s Top Ten Film Festival celebrates and promotes contemporary Canadian cinema and raises awareness of Canadian achievements in film. This curated selection of the best features of 2014 highlights the extraordinary vision of Canadian filmmakers, from esteemed veterans to emerging talents.
