Montclair FF 15 – DEEP WEB

Festival Screening – Saturday, May 9 @ 4pm

In 2011, an anonymous marketplace called Silk Road opened on an otherwise hidden section of the internet known as the “deep web.” Because of the site’s use of a complex and untraceable routing system, Silk Road became a trading location for illegal narcotics, drawing the attention of law enforcement and, ultimately, the arrest of a single individual, Ross William Ulbricht. In DEEP WEB, director Alex Winter charts the story of Silk Road, from its founding to Ulbricht’s arrest and trial, raising troubling questions about the role of government surveillance and the fractured nature of online identity.
