An acclaimed National Film Board of Canada (NFB) project to inject new life into the short documentary genre goes live in Canada starting January 8, with free streaming of five new non-fiction Quebec shorts at NFB.ca and via NFB apps for smartphones, tablets and connected TV.

Called 5 Shorts Project (Projet 5 courts), it’s a collaboration between the NFB and regional artist-run centres and production centres across Quebec, starting with Quebec City-based indie film co-op Spira in season one.

The NFB/Spira partnership has already made waves, with Nicolas Lévesque’s Interview with a Free Man named to the Toronto International Film Festival’s prestigious Canada’s Top Ten Shorts list for 2015 and featured at New York’s Tribeca Film Festival. It’s joined by Jeremy Peter Allen’s At the Beach, featured at the Vancouver International Film Festival; John Blouin’s Hey Lou!, which screened at the Festival du nouveau cinéma in Montreal; Nadine Beaudet’s World of Passage; and Martin Bureau’s Hell Runs on Gasoline!, which played at Hot Docs, London’s Raindance Film Festival and the Chicago international Film Festival.

Running from three to six minutes in length each, the films in 5 Shorts Project were shot entirely in 4K digital. The films were produced by Nathalie Cloutier and Colette Loumède for the NFB and Catherine Benoit for Spira.

For season two of 5 Shorts Project, the NFB is partnering with Chicoutimi-based La bande Sonimage, which supports video creation in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region.
