The Spirit of Action Prize honors a film that examines and inspires action to address
important social, economic, political and cultural issues.

SANTA CRUZ, CA, October 18, 2010 – The Santa Cruz Film Festival (SCFF), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the support and promotion of moving image arts in California’s Greater Monterey Bay Area, announces the creation of a new jury award, The Spirit of Action Prize, which will be presented to a Festival film whose goal is to advocate and call action to important and relevant issues.

The competition will include 5-6 films that will be reviewed and judged by a 3-4 person jury comprised of local and national filmmakers, industry professionals, media and activist leaders. The winner will be named on Closing Night, Saturday, May 14, 2011, at the Rio Theatre. Both narrative and documentary films that meet the Festival’s regular submission criteria are eligible for consideration into the competition.

The Spirit of Action Prize joins the already robust competitive section of the Festival, which also includes jury prizes for Best Narrative Feature, Best Documentary Feature, the EarthVision Environmental Film Prize and the Emerging Filmmaker Award, honoring a first or second-time feature filmmaker. Audience Awards are also given in nine categories.

“Santa Cruz has a long and rich history of activism, and the Festival is excited to celebrate that legacy with this new prize,” Director of Programming, Julian Soler, said. “SCFF has always presented films that seek to raise awareness of important subjects, and this new prize will further support activist films and filmmakers. Winning an award at a film festival provides much needed exposure for independent films that typically struggle to reach wide audiences.”

Interested filmmakers should submit their films via SCFF’s website, http://www.santacruzfilmfestival.org, to be considered for inclusion in the Festival program and competition. Submissions will be accepted through February 25, 2011. Early-bird discounts are available for films submitting before November 19, 2010 followed by the Regular deadline of February 11, 2011.
