Special Presentations Program Includes Music Legends, Pop Icons, Athletes & Much More @ Hot Docs 2019

Toronto – Hot Docs is pleased to announce 16 additional documentary features that will screen in this year’s Special Presentations program. Special Presentations features a high-profile collection of world and international premieres, award winners from the recent international festival circuit and works by master filmmakers or featuring star subjects.

Notable subjects featured as part of the Special Presentations program include world renowned sex therapist, media personality and author Dr. Ruth Westheimer (Ask Dr. Ruth); jazz great and trumpet virtuoso Miles Davis (Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool); beloved Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot (Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind); Michael Hutchence, lead singer of popular Australian rock band INXS (Mystify: Michael Hutchence); Willie O’Ree, the first Black hockey player to make it to the NHL (Willie); former NBA player and mental health advocate Metta World Peace (formerly known as Ron Artest) (Quiet Storm: The Ron Artest Story); design guru and enigmatic entrepreneur John DeLorean (Framing John DeLorean); former military intelligence analyst and whistleblower Chelsea Manning (XY Chelsea); and Stieg Larsson, Swedish journalist and author of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series (Stieg Larsson: The Man Who Played With Fire).

The program will also screen the North American premiere of The Rest, a new film by Ai Weiwei that follows refugees in Europe stuck between a crumbling humanitarian aid system and intensifying nationalism; look at the aftermath of China’s “one-child-policy” in One Child Nation, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance this year; probe into the 1961 plane crash that took the life of UN Secretary General Hammarskjöld in Cold Case Hammarskjöld; and explore the evolution of emojis in the colourful and creative film Picture Character.

Special Presentations will screen as part of the 2019 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, running April 25 to May 5. The full selection of films to screen at Hot Docs 2019, including the opening night film, will be announced on March 19. Ticket packages and passes are now on sale online. Ticket package redemption and single ticket sales for Hot Docs members are available starting March 19. Single ticket sales open to the public on March 26.
