Tallin Black Nights Film Festival Kicks Off

The 19th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (BNFF) opened on Friday, November 13 with its inaugural black carpet and the restored 1929 satire comedy My Grandmother, directed by Georgian actor, director, and cartoonist Kote Miqaberidze. The previously banned silent film panning bureaucracy also kicked off this year’s Georgian retrospective.

The Opening Film was accompanied live by the Georgian Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Nikoloz Rachveli. They also played an original piece over clips of Georgian films earlier in the evening, and at the end, got a long standing ovation from the audience at the Nordea Concert Hall.

With Estonia celebrating 2015 as the Year of Music, the evening was appropriately themed as BNFF’s Lifetime Achievement Award went to two renowned Estonian composers – Arvo Part and Veljo Tormis who have given soul to cinema with their music over the years…more
