Vancover critics love Rebelle, Toronto crowns Polley

The Vancouver Film Critics Circle has named Kim Nguyen’s Rebelle the best Canadian film of the year while Toronto critics chose Sarah Polley’s Stories We Tell. Inexplicably, Toronto did not even nominate Rebelle.

About a young African girl’s harrowing journey as a child soldier, Rebelle also picked up awards for Rachel Mwanza as best actress and Serge Kany-inda as best supporting actor.  It is  Canada’s official entry for best foreign language film at the Oscars.  Vancouver also chose Kathryn Bigelow as best director of 2012 for her work on Zero Dark Thirty, which collected the best film of the year award.

Strangely, Toronto Film Critics Association did not even nominate Rebelle for best picture.  It gave the  nod twice for Polley’s autobiographical Stories We Tell for best Canadian picture and best documentary.  Stories premiered at TIFF last year to strong reviews and will screen at Sundance.
