Distributor’s thoughts on TIFF

by Stuart Strutin for FILMbutton

It’s getting harder to find a good film. Not that they are not being made. It’s just that the definition keeps changing. A “good” film as defined in the 90’s may not be acquired or released in the current market. There are lots of good films at TIFF. As everyone knows, the marketplace has become more fragmented and demanding, and unfortunately, as good as some films may be, good isn’t good enough any more. It’s getting harder to balance the commercial prospects of a film against its artistic merits, and acquire something that meets the requirements in both categories. An Ordinary Man and Up in the Air are two Films this year are Films that do both. I’m still trying to find a smaller Film that does the same thing.
