Finalists selected for 2013 Jump Cuts Young Filmmakers Showcase

Toronto – The TIFF Kids International Film Festival (tiff.kids) has selected the finalists for the 12th annual Jump Cuts Young Filmmakers Showcase. Open to Ontario youth in two categories — Grades 4 to 6 and Grades 7 to 8 — the Jump Cuts competition encourages young cinephiles to engage in a forum of creativity, providing the opportunity for these emerging filmmakers to see their work on the big screen.

The selected films will screen Sunday, April 21 at 1:15 p.m. (Grades 7 to 8) and 1:30 p.m. (Grades 4 to 6) at TIFF Bell Lightbox. Winners of the Jump Cuts Young Filmmakers Showcase will be announced following the screenings at the TIFF Kids Awards Ceremony taking place at 3:15 p.m.

This year, 25 short films from finalists in communities across Ontario — including Barrie, Woodstock and across the Greater Toronto Area — will be presented. The lineup explores themes and topics such as family, friendship, self-confidence, adventure and imagination, and addresses real-life issues such as poverty.

This year’s films include stop-motion, pixilation and clay animation, and range from side-splitting comedies to thought-provoking documentaries. Finalists were chosen based on proficiency in form, expression, experimentation and content.

A jury comprised of film industry professionals will select the grand prize-winning film in each grade category. This year’s jury includes: Marney Malabar, Executive in Charge of Production, TVOKids The Space; Cory Bowles, award-winning director, actor, choreographer and writer who received a Gemini for his role as Cory in the TV series Trailer Park Boys and narrated CBC’s internationally broadcast children’s series Poko; and Agata Smoluch Del Sorbo, Programmer, Canadian Feature Films, TIFF.

The 2013 Jump Cuts Grand Prizes are as follows:

The Frederick Simpson Award for Best Film Grades 4 to 6
The Veronica Herman Award for Best Film Grades 7 to 8
TVOKids Choice Award for Grades 4 to 6
