FILMMAKER DOMINIC ALLAN IN ATTENDANCE

Toronto – Hot Docs is pleased to announce that February’s Doc Soup will screen the Toronto premiere of CALVET (D: Dominic Allan, UK, 86 minutes). Called “an emotional roller coaster” by Daily Telegraph UK and “the perfect documentary subject” by The Guardian, CALVET will screen on Wednesday, February 8, at 6:30 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. Advance tickets are now available for purchase online at www.hotdocs.ca. Filmmaker Dominic Allan will be in attendance to introduce the film and answer questions following the screenings.

Never believe you’ve played your last hand. Jean Marc Calvet lived a dark and violent life. Then at age 38, a terrifying trip to hell and back gave him a second chance. On the run in Central America and haunted by his past, he shut himself away in a house and decided that death was his only way out. For nine months he suffered a terrifying metamorphosis and was saved only by a can of industrial paint. Now a successful artist with exhibitions in New York City, his work sells for tens of thousands of dollars. But in an effort to face his remaining demons head on, he must set out on a quest for redemption and return to France to find the son he abandoned over 10 years ago.

The Doc Soup monthly screening series brings the latest Canadian and international documentaries to the big screen in Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver and Winnipeg. Single tickets for CALVET are $14 and can be purchased in advance at www.hotdocs.ca or at the door on the night of the screening (subject to availability). A limited number of free tickets for the 9:15 p.m. screening will be available to students with proper ID (subject to availability) at the door, on a first-come first-served basis beginning at 5:30 p.m.
