Flickers – RIIFF Screens Quebecoise Films In Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 5, 2013) – As part of “Le Mois de la Francophonie,” the annual global celebration of the French language, The Flickers: Rhode Island International Film Festival in partnership with The Alliance Française de Providence and The Délégation du Québec à Boston will present a series of diverse and thought provoking French speaking films from Quebec. The screenings will be free, open to the public, and take place on March 15th and 16th at the International House of Rhode Island in Providence. The Ciné-Quebec series will begin Friday night at 7:00 P.M. with an introduction from the Delegate of Quebec to New England, Mr. Jean Saintonge.

“Quebec has recently become a leader in international cinema and we are thrilled to be featuring some of these great works in our Ciné-Quebec series,” said Shawn Quirk, the Program Director of Flickers. “This year was the third year in a row that a Québec film has been nominated for “Best Foreign Picture” at the Oscars and that is cause for not only celebration, but discovery, which is what this series is about.”

On Saturday, March 15th and Sunday March 16th, Flickers, in collaboration with the Délégation Générale du Québec à Boston and l’Alliance Française de Providence, will be presenting a series of Québec feature films at The Rhode Island International House. The National Delegate of Quebec, Mr. Jean Saintonge, will be present to introduce this eclectic and diverse series of films.

J’ai tué ma mère (I Killed My Mother). Directed by Xavier Dolan, 2009

Twenty-year old Xavier Dolan’s debut feature film about a just-out-of-the-closet teenagers contempt for his mother. Dolan writes, directs and stars in this semi-autobiographical
tale.

March 16th
4:00 P.M
En terrain connu (Familiar Grounds). Directed by Stéphane Lafleur, 2010

Maryse and her husband Alain live an existence without history in their suburban home, where they try to sell their shovel. The life of Benedict’s brother, Maryse, is a bit more complicated: he lives with his ailing father, has a difficult relationship with a single mother and has to meet a man who claims to be from the future, and wants to warn about an impending accident. To help his sister, he went with her family cottage where they must
retrieve a trailer. Those few hours spent together will enable them to get closer.

Mr. Lazhar. Directed by Philippe Farlardeu, 2011

Bachir Lazhar, an Algerian immigrant, is hired to replace an elementary school teacher who died tragically. While the class goes through a long healing process, nobody in the school is aware of Bachir’s painful former life. This film was nominated for best foreign picture in 2012.
