Hugh Hefner: Playboy Activist and Rebel, the 2010 feature documentary by Academy Award winner Brigitte Berman, has been nominated for an Image Award for Best Documentary Feature for theatrical or television, by the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) at a media press conference in Los Angeles on Wednesday, January 12, 2011. The 42nd NAACP Image Awards ceremony will take place on Friday, March 4th in Los Angeles, and will be aired live at 8:00-10:00 pm ET on FOX.

The 42nd NAACP IMAGE AWARDS honor individuals or groups who promote social justice through creative endeavours and celebrate the accomplishments of people of color in the fields of television, music, literature and film. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is America’s oldest and largest civil rights organization.

“What a great honour”, said Berman. “I’ve been fortunate to have received many prestigious awards over the years, but this recognition by the NAACP of the documentary’s strong focus on civil rights and social justice, is most gratifying.”

The film, aside from taking a revealing look at the outspoken founder of the Playboy empire, also shows Hefner as a tenacious advocate for civil rights and social justice over the past fifty years. In fact, the NAACP has recognized Mr. Hefner personally for his strong commitment to civil rights when he received a special Image award himself.

Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel has been showcased at over twenty international film festivals on five continents since it first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. It won first prize at last year’s Rhode Island International Film Festival. The film has also won positive acclaim from critics including Roger Ebert

in the Chicago Sun-Times; “As Hefner speaks, you realize that he believes in civil rights and liberties so deeply that it’s instinctive.” and Leonard Maltin for The Huffington Post; “This compelling documentary – may open your eyes. It chronicles [Hefner’s] battles over censorship, freedom of speech, breaking the color barrier and much much more”
