CFC is pleased to announce that RHYMES FOR YOUNG GHOULS, the 20th feature film produced through CFC Features, will open for an exclusive theatrical release in Toronto on January 31, 2014 at the Cineplex Cinemas Yonge-Dundas, with additional cities and opening dates to be announced shortly. RHYMES FOR YOUNG GHOULS marks the feature directorial debut of Jeff Barnaby (The Colony, File Under Miscellaneous), and stars Canadian Screen Award-nominee Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs, Glen Gould (One Dead Indian), and Brandon Oakes (Into the West).

RHYMES FOR YOUNG GHOULS is set on the fictional Red Crow Mi’gMaq reservation in the year 1976. By government decree, every Indian child under the age of 18 must attend residential school. In the kingdom of the crow, that means imprisonment at St. Dymphna’s. That means being at the mercy of “Popper”, the sadistic Indian agent who runs the school. At 15, Aila is the weed princess of Red Crow. Hustling with her uncle Burner, she sells enough dope to pay Popper her “truancy tax”, keeping her out of St. D’s. But when Aila’s drug money is stolen and her father Joseph returns from prison, the precarious balance of Aila’s world is destroyed. Her only options are to run or fight … and Mi’gMaq don’t run.

Following a strong showing on the festival circuit, where it had its World Premiere at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), RHYMES FOR YOUNG GHOULS, was chosen as one of Canada’s Top Ten by TIFF. Hailed by audiences and critics alike, the film shared the prize for Best First Canadian Feature at the Vancouver International Film Festival. Director Jeff Barnaby was also chosen Best Director of a Canadian Film by the Vancouver Film Critics Circle and was awarded the $50,000 in services prize by filmmaker Norman Jewison, recipient of the Technicolor Clyde Gilmour Award at the Toronto Film Critics Association awards. “We are thrilled to have audiences, industry players and critics alike responding so positively to this film; and ultimately, all sharing our anticipation for more from Jeff Barnaby” says CFC Executive Producer Justine Whyte.

A Prospector Films production distributed in Canada by Les Films Seville with international sales being handled by Entertainment One Films International, RHYMES FOR YOUNG GHOULS is written and directed by the award-winning Jeff Barnaby and produced by John Christou (Up the Yangtze, File Under Miscellaneous, Sorry Rabbi) and Aisling Chin-Yee (Three Mothers, Sorry Rabbi). The Executive Producer for CFC is Justine Whyte. The film is lensed by cinematographer Michel St. Martin (Karakara, Mila, Tout sur moi), post-production by Post-Moderne (Laurence Anyways, Les amours imaginaires, Les mots gelés), and visual effects by Shervin Shoghian (Total Recall, Men in Black 3, TRON: Legacy).
