Video Services Corp (VSC) has signed a deal for North American rights on all platforms for Happy Slapping, a feature film shot entirely on smartphones, without the involvement of Apple. Inspired by true events, Happy Slapping follows a group of five rich suburban kids as they set off to the inner city to seek out fame. Their plan is to manufacture an evening so shocking that their smartphone footage will turn them into instant Internet celebrities. After the group is threatened by another street gang and intimidated by their online idol, they are forced to take their misbehavior up a notch in order to make a name for themselves. And, as always things get out of hand, however, this time everything’s being recorded!

All five actors doubled as cameramen; the entire film is shot with smartphones. Due to current camera phone technology limitations, no video assist monitor, no playback was used during shooting. The result is possibly a whole new cinema language, where the actors are truly the filmmakers.

The film was developed and produced with the participation of Telefilm Canada

This multi-platform distribution deal was negotiated between Christos Sourligas of One Man Band Films and Jonathan Gross of VSC. VSC is planning a spring 2014 release.
