Montclair FF 15 – THE BLACK PANTHERS: VANGUARD OF THE REVOLUTION

Festival Screening – Saturday, May 2 @ 6:30pm

In his new documentary, award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson examines the rise and fall of The Black Panther Party, the revolutionary black socialist group that re- defined community activism in America. Rising from the streets of Oakland, Huey Newton and Bobby Seale formed the Panthers to confront state violence head on, but the vitality of the Panthers as an organization went much deeper, connecting with the disenfranchised to expose and fill unmet needs in the community. Nelson’s film is rich in archival detail, capturing the incendiary atmosphere of the era while drawing clear parallels with our own embattled times.
