Immerse yourself in the ultimate 3D adventure

Films We Like is pleased to announce that the ground-breaking documentary Storm Surfers 3D, by Chris Nelius and Justin McMillan will open across Canada on Friday, June 28 in theatres in Toronto (TIFF Bell Lightbox; Empire Whitby, Square One Mississauga; Ottawa (Empire Kanata); and Halifax (Bayer’s Lake).

This unique, all-encompassing cinematic experience takes its audience along on the journey of two good friends as they seek out never-before-surfed waves in some of the worlds’ most remote and forbidding locations. Putting the viewer in the middle of the action, over, under and in the waves, the audience experiences every exhilarating moment along side the team.

3D cameras are literally brought into the ocean, as unique, world-first rigs and tiny 3D cameras allow for best friends and pro-surfers Ross Clarke-Jones and Tom Carroll to film as they ride 20ft waves like human camera cranes, hurtling down waves at over sixty kilometers an hour.

The Story

This pulse-racing real-life adventure follows two of Australia’s greatest surf legends over one big-wave winter season in 2011 on their quest to hunt down and ride the Pacific’s biggest and most dangerous waves. Ross Clarke-Jones and Tom Carroll strive to reconcile their yearning for the ultimate thrill with the realities of aging and the comforts of home and family.

Based in Sydney, they enlist the help of surf-forecasting guru and meteorologist Ben Matson to track the giant oceanic storms that create massive swells. But over the course of the season, faced with danger and potential disaster, the cracks begins to show and Ross and Tom are forced to come to terms with the fact that their bodies can’t always keep up with their minds when making snap decisions on the water.

Their final mission of the season becomes the most perilous of their lives. As they uncover the mystery of a mythical wave named Turtle Dove Shoal, Tom must decide whether to push the boundaries of life and luck in this quest to triumph over one of the last remaining unsurfed waves in Australia.

The Filmmakers

Justin McMillan and Chris Nelius are a Sydney-based documentary Director/ Writer/ Producer partnership that began in 2005 with the making of The Sixth Element, a bio-pic about Ross Clarke-Jones.

In 2007, Justin and Chris joined forces with Firelight Productions to create Storm Surfers as a branded television series. Both Storm Surfers – Dangerous Banks and Storm Surfers – New Zealand have gone to screen in more than 100 countries.

Taking the seemingly logical leap from Storm Surfers 3 to Storm Surfers 3D, the teams wanted to escalate the stakes but using yet-to-be invented camera technology.
